DeSantis to Eliminate Common Core from Florida Schools

On Thursday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he will be issuing an executive order to eliminate Common Core in Florida schools. The reason behind this is because many parents have previously complained that the curriculum was rigid and involved too much testing. DeSantis also said that Education Commissioner, Richard Concoran will be working alongside the Board of Education to come up with a new plan for curriculum standards. “We stuck with Common Core, and then we re-branded it…It’s all the same. It all needs to be looked at, it all needs to be scrutinized.”

There are many people that support DeSantis’ actions against Common Core. Robert Runcie, the Broward County Superintendent agrees that Common Core is something that needs to be eliminated. “We need fundamental reforms in public education that will give our teachers the freedom they need to better engage students. It is time to reduce our reliance on a testing culture that is more about ranking students on their potential, when our focus should be more on developing their potential.”

Common Core sets standards for what students should know at the end of every grade from K-12 and focuses on math and language arts. Florida first introduced Common Core to its schools back in 2010 and revised it in 2014.
