Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump met in Hanoi, Vietnam Wednesday and Thursday to discuss possible denuclearization

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met this Wednesday and Thursday. The President’s goal: complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Tuesday morning, Donald Trump arrived just before 9 p.m. in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi aboard the Air Force One. Kim Jong Un arrived hours earlier at 8:22 a.m. by train at the Dong Dong station along the China-Vietnam border. This is the second summit to he held between the two leaders, following the first of the historic talks held in Singapore last year.

The summit was expected to determine whether both sides could make progress toward ending North Korea’s nuclear threat and delivering necessary economic relief to the impoverished nation.

Although North Korea’s nuclear threat is prominent, President Trump appeared to be in no rush to achieve North Korean denuclearization. Trump has stated, “I don’t want to rush anybody. I just don’t want testing. As long as there’s no testing, we’re happy.”

President Trump abruptly ended the two-day conference early on Thursday, after acknowledging that there would be no deal on the possible North Korean denuclearization. The conflict began with both sides disagreeing on just what “denuclearization” meant. Although the White House had scheduled a “signing ceremony” for Thursday, Trump has indicated that Kim Jong Un failed to meet US requirements for the future dismantling North Korean nuclear facilities.

According to Mr. Trump, “it was about the sanctions. Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that.” He then added, “they were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”

There are currently no future summits between the two nations scheduled.
