The strike began on February 22nd in protest of a proposed 2% raise after years of consistently low salaries. Teachers walked out of school to protest the insufficient benefits and salaries given across the state. On average, teachers in West Virginia are paid $13,000 less than the national average. With a 5% pay raise, West Virginia is now ranked 46th in the nation in average teacher salary.
