As we kick off the start to Black History Month, OCSA’s Black Student Union (BSU) has announced that they will continue their annual tradition of a Black History Month showcase this year! Every year in the month of February, the U.S. takes a deep look into the importance of Black Americans throughout history and their importance in many aspects such as art, music, government, etc.

The showcase will be held on Friday, February 26th in the auditorium with COVID precautions in place to keep everybody safe. Currently, the show is planned to start at 6 p.m., but that is subject to change. It is not stated if the event will be live streamed for those who cannot attend, but any future updates can be found on their Instagram at @ocsabsu, which the BSU encourages everyone to follow. Ticket pricing information has not yet been provided.

The showcase this year will include their traditional fashion show, but compared to previous years, this showcase will include more than just the fashion show. There will be a music video featuring all black and brown girls at OCSA. For those interested in being featured in the video, it is requested that you send a video of yourself either alone or with a friend having fun and being “in their element” to [email protected] by February 12th. They will accept both high school students and alumni.

If anyone is interested in performing in the showcase, auditions will be held digitally through Teams on Thursday, February 4th, at 4:30 p.m. The form to sign up for an audition can be found in the bio of their Instagram. Once a student fills out the form they will be added to the Teams channel. According to their official Instagram, they state, “Your performance must represent some aspect of the black community, it can even be a piece that was put together by a POC (person of color). ”

During the last week of February, BSU will hold a spirit week leading up to the showcase. Here are the following themes for each day.

  • Monday, Feb. 22 – All Black
  • Tuesday, Feb. 23 – Favorite Music Artist (in honor of the fashion show portion of the show).
  • Wednesday, Feb. 24 – BSU colors (red, green, black and yellow).
  • Thursday, Feb. 25 – Throwback Thursday: Decade Edition (a reference to the 2020 fashion show theme).
  • Friday, Feb. 26 – Dress to Impress
