Cargo Ships Must Begin Cutting Down Emissions

Delegates in the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently convened in London to discuss cargo emissions. The organization is setting unprecedented limits on the brokering of a new deal that hopes to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Presently, international shipping emissions take up about 2 to 3 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the world. The emissions, largely consisted of carbon dioxide and methane, adversely impact the oceans and atmosphere, and the IMO has taken it upon themselves to combat the environmental deterioration.

The committee hopes to move forward with regulations on global shipping by mandating industries to adopt carbon-saving policies, hoping to save the planet from the threats of global warming.
