Barbara Bush, widely adored mother of one United States president and former first lady of another, has died at 92 on Tuesday, April 17 in her home in Houston.

Jim McGrath, the family’s assistant,  confirmed her death on twitter: “Statement by the Office of @GeorgeHWBush on the passing of Barbara Pierce Bush this evening at the age of 92.”

Former President George H. W. Bush explained that she decided to not seek further treatment after having discussed the situation with her family. Mrs. Bush had been hospitalized earlier on for pneumonia in 2013 following a surgery she endured in 2008, according to the New York Times.

She was a charismatic and popular first lady. During her husband’s presidency, she was considered the republicans’ secret weapon. Barbara had six children. One of her sons, George W, was president (2001-2009) and another, Jeb, a candidate in the last elections to the White House.

Barbara Bush has been the only woman, along with Abigail Adams, to be the wife and mother of presidents of the United States. Despite her role imposing discipline within her family, the public had a warm and jovial image of Bush.

Barbara leaves her husband, six children, seventeen grandchildren, and her brother, Scott Pierce behind. Barbara’s memory and legacy, however, will live on. May she rest in peace.
