Puerto Rico after losing power.

An island-wide power outage struck Puerto Rico almost seven months after Hurricane Maria. In October, the category five hurricane totaled the island’s power grid and left millions powerless for months. It was only after $2.5 billion were allocated that the island witnessed a restoration of its power. Now, six months later, yet another outage has struck. Electricity authorities have estimated that the power will be returned within 24 to 36 hours, and that this outage is the second largest in the United States’ history.

Puerto Rican residents are outraged at the electric company. Jose Carrillo, 55, told The New York Times, “You go three months without electricity and you think you’re back to normalcy and [then] this happens again.” Electricity companies rushed to restore power to airports and major hospitals. The blackout has once again shown the island’s need for a stable power grid. After over three months of unsteady power, many residents have simply left Puerto Rico. The lack-of-electricity driven emigration led to such a drastic decline in K-12 enrollment that over 300 schools closing in the next school year.

After 24 hours, around a million customers have had their power restored. Many Puerto Ricans, however, believe the solution is only temporary and are fear it is not long until their power is lost again.
