Universal Studio’s Shrek 4D is officially closing on January 10, 2022. Along with the attraction, the gift shop, Shrek’s Ye Olde Souvenir Shoppe, will be replaced as well. After 18 years of the running attraction, Universal will replace it with a new Despicable Me Minions attraction.

Shrek has been big for decades since the release. The first movie was released in April 2001, and the last movie was released in May 2010, making them 21- 12 years old. The movies have had a large impact on society and the Gen Z population. Memes and other forms of media have been created from the movies, making it one of Dreamworks’ greatest hits. They got big enough to get a musical, and multiple holiday shorts, like Shrek Spooky Stories released in October 2018.

The attraction had a Shrek-themed waiting line, with a backstory room that was decorated to look like the torture room from the Gingerbread Man scene in the first movie. It followed the journey of Shrek and Donkey attempting to save Fiona from the ghost of Lord Farquaad. It was located at the beginning of the park.

Universal has been hinting about the minions’ attraction on social media. One of the posts on their official Instagram is a video of an onion, representing a Shrek, being replaced with a banana, which is for minions. They captioned their post with “Lots of layers here.” Many of the comments are unsatisfied fans, expressing their dislike to the number of minion replacements they have gotten.

One commenter replied to their post, “Do we really need more minions?” Another stating, “We already have a minion ride guys… come on … first Beetlejuice… now Shrek.” Other social media platforms, like TikTok, have fans complaining about Shrek leaving for a “downgrade,” leaving Universal with a high expectation to reach. User @universalparksnewstoday posted a video on the decision, with 5.1 million views and 1 million likes. Comments in this video weren’t much different from the ones on Instagram.

The future attraction is rumored to release in 2023.
