Joe Rogan, one of Spotify’s top podcasters, has recently been accused of  spreading misinformation about COVID-19. A group of more than 200 professors and public health officials questioned Spotify about the mass amount of COVID-19 deception located on its platform. Though the episode wasn’t called to be removed, many asked for Spotify to better moderate the content being streamed on its platform. Rogan featured an American disease expert on his podcast, Dr. Robert Malone, who made several, according to critics, ‘questionable’ statements about the virus in his episode.

Two have removed their music from the platform in protest of Spotify’s allowance of COVID-19 misinformation. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, both who carry a large cultural influence in their music, have revoked all of their tracks with the goal to protest.

Spotify responded to the criticism on January 30th, putting new policies in place with the goal to highlight its platform rules in both creator and publish tools, along with raising awareness around what is acceptable and assisting creators in understanding their accountability. The platform also pledges to add a content advisory to any podcast episode that includes a discussion about COVID-19, along with providing a resource with its intentions rooted in educating listeners about data-driven facts, up-to-date information, shared by trusted sources.

C.E.O of Spotify, Daniel Ek, stated, “Based on the feedback over the last several weeks, it’s become clear to me that we have an obligation to do more to provide balance and access to widely-accepted information from the medical and scientific communities guiding us through this unprecedented time.”

Joe Rogan, owner of the “Joe Rogan Experience,” took to Instagram and posted a video explaining how he felt concerning the situation, along with offering improvements that he could make to his own platform.

“My point of doing this is always just to create interesting conversations and ones that I hope people enjoy,” Rogan said in the video, centered around his thoughts on the controversy with Spotify. As of the time of publishing, Rogan’s episode still remains on Spotify, though mainly on the list to have a content advisory added with its usage of the topic of COVID-19.
