Bridge in Pittsburgh collapses

Alexander Mata, Reporter

On January 28th, a section of Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh, being one of the longest roads in the city collapsed on the ravine it once overpassed, bringing a few cars and a bus down with it. The bridge was said to already be in poor condition and being nearly 50 years old.

At least 10 people were injured during the sudden collapse, with 4 being seriously injured. No deaths have been reported, and it is hoped that those injured will recover soon. A high chance of the collapse was certain, with traffic crowding the bridge along with the bridge already being in such bad condition and the addition of heavy snowfall in the area. Yet, it’s still undecided what really caused the collapse.

First responders had a tough time reaching down the ravine trying to rescue each and every person down there, having to create chains by holding hands and the end person gripping onto people below. A gas line was also ruptured, but quickly fixed, although it left a lingering odor throughout the morning.

Just before this event, Joe Biden was already planning to head on over to Pittsburgh and talk about the city’s infrastructure. It was thought to be “surreal” by a local official. With Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan, he stated during his meeting that “There are another 3,300 bridges here in Pennsylvania, some of which are just as old and in just as decrepit condition as that bridge was.” He pledges to “…rebuild that bridge, along with thousands of other bridges in Pennsylvania and across the country.”
