A Green Comet Visible for the First time since the Stone Age

Currently there is a green comet that is visible in the Northen Hemisphere in the early morning. The comet is named C/2022 E3 ZTF, nicknamed comment ZTF. It named ZTF after the facility of scientist that discovered it, the Zwicky Transient Facility in California. It has not been seen for 50,000 years.

The comet was first discovered to exist on March 2nd of 2022. To see it in the sky, you would have to look near the North Star, which is in the Big Dipper Constellation. The comet is visible in the Central Florida during mid-January to Mid-February and is visible all throughout the Northern Hemisphere. In Florida, and the whole of the Northern Hemisphere, it is noticeable from 10:00 pm all the way until dawn, provided that the weather is clear. The comment was the closest the Sun on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.  It will be visible in the Southern Hemisphere starting February 1st. In, India, Lucknow, Indira Ghandi Planeterium Personnel will give out binocular and telescopes for people who wish to see the comet more up close.

Due to people’s excitement about being able to see the comet, a live stream has been set up monitoring the comet’s location. Though people are excited about being able to see the comet, they should be aware that the comet is not as green or bright up close as it is in pictures. When seen up close, according to Mark Pitts, “…it’s not so colorful, it’s grayish, and rather fuzzy.” To see it in the sky, you would have to look near the North Star, which is in the Big Dipper Constellation.

Being able to see it is a once in a lifetime chance, considering that after it’s out of the solar system, it’s either going to be gone for tens of thousands of years, or get out of our solar system, never to be seen again.
