Kala Banham, a former OCSA student, was recently cast on The Voice! Her success on the show has reigned since her blind audition on Tuesday, March 7, to her emotional version of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” This performance mesmerized judges, resulting in her being chosen by her now coach Niall Horan.

The Voice is an American singing reality competition that airs on NBC. It’s an incredible chance for singers to be noticed. Winners of the show such as Morgan Wallen, Cassadee Pope, and Jordan Smith have been very successful after competing, like releasing chart-topping songs along with writing well known ones for other singers.

Kala turned to social media after her first episode aired to thank her friends and family for watching and supporting her. She wrote, “Thank you much for all of the love, everyone! I am truly so humbled by and appreciative for all of the support. This song and performance means so much to me, and I’m so happy to finally share it with everybody watching at home. Sending all my love!”

In the most recent episode of The Voice on Monday, March 27th, contestants went head-to-head against singers of the same team to perform one song. Kala was against fellow team member Gina Miles, and their chosen song was Gina Miles’s “Skinny Love.” Despite losing the performance, Kala was “stolen” by coach Kelly Clarkson, a trope in the show where other coaches have a one-time “steal” for a losing artist to take them to their team.

At OCSA, we are incredibly proud of Kala’s entry to The Voice, and hope that she makes it even farther in the competition!
