A Louisville bank employee armed with a rifle opened fire at his workplace on Monday, April 10, 2023, killing five people, including a close friend of Kentucky’s governor, while livestreaming the attack on Instagram, authorities say.

Police arrived as shots were still being fired inside Old National Bank and killed the shooter in an exchange of gunfire, Louisville’s metro police department (LMPD) chief, Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel explained. The city’s mayor, Craig Greenberg, called the attack “an evil act of targeted violence.” Police identified the dead as Joshua Barrick, 40; Thomas Elliot, 63; Juliana Farmer, 45; and James Tutt, 64.

Nine people, including two police officers, were treated for injuries from the Louisville shooting at the University of Louisville (UofL) hospital. One of the wounded, identified as 57-year-old Deanna Eckert, died from injuries Monday night. Andy Beshear, the Governor of Kentucky, on the verge of tears, said during a news briefing that he knew some of the victims, including Elliot, a senior vice-president at the bank.

“I have a very close friend who didn’t make it today, and I have another close friend who didn’t, either. And one who’s at the hospital that I hope is going to make it through,” Deputy Chief of the LMPD, Paul Humphrey stated. He told reporters that his officers were on the scene within three minutes of the first 911 call and immediately confronted the shooter.

“They absolutely saved people’s lives,” Humphrey said regarding the officers. “It was the heroic response of the officers that made sure that no more people were more seriously injured.” The department identified the shooter as Connor Sturgeon, 23, who worked at the Old National Bank as a full-time employee last year. The investigation into the shooting at the National Bank would be lengthy, Humphrey said.

At least five gunshot sounds were audible in a tweet posted by an eyewitness. Footage from a news helicopter showed a large law enforcement presence around the bank and shattered glass from the building’s frontage spread across a sidewalk. The shooting took place at about 8.30am local time and the bank was not scheduled to open until 9am.

But less than a week later, two people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting Saturday, April 15, 2023, in a Louisville Park.

Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters during a press conference that the shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. in Chickasaw Park where hundreds were attempting to enjoy their Saturday night. He said six were shot when a gunman opened fire into a crowd. Two people were found dead in the park while those with injuries were transported to the UofL Hospital by ambulance. One of those people was reported to be in critical condition.

Although reports indicated that Chickasaw Park was packed with hundreds of people at the time of the shooting, according to the statement, Humphrey said there were no witnesses to the attack during a news conference held at the scene.

Authorities have opened a probe into the shooting at Chickasaw Park and are investigating the attack as a homicide, according to the LMPD. They have not yet identified a suspect in connection with the incident or any potential motive and later said it was unclear whether the shooting was carried out by one or multiple people.
