Welcome back to Fetch Fits! Over the past two years, we’ve discussed everything from pink sweater vests to giant cat costumes. Looking at wild, whacky clothes is fun, but sometimes it’s good to go back to the basics. That is why this article is dedicated to one of the most iconic wardrobe basics of all time: the white button down.
The white button down is loved by many for its versatility and timelessness. It can be worn with blue jeans and simple accessories for a classic casual look. It can be dressed up with a skirt or nice pants. Or it can be worn as an extra layer thrown over an outfit instead of as a shirt. Even though a white button down is a classic piece, you can still have fun with it- be it long sleeved, short sleeved, cropped, extra-long, oversized- there are countless options to choose from. “I like my button downs to have crisp collars. I also think the half-untucked look is pretty cool,” says Amy Flores, a freshman creative writer and aspiring fashion designer.
Fabric and fit are two of the most important factors to consider when shopping for a white button down of your own. When you live in a hot, rainy place, breathable and opaque fabrics are the way to go. Cotton is an all-around great option, but cotton blends can also work well. Some blends even have anti-wrinkle properties- great for those who aren’t fans of the constant ironing and wrinkling that comes with pure cotton. The fit is also important- go for a slightly larger fit to make it easier to wear over other shirts.
In an era obsessed with microtrends, it can feel impossible to find a plain old non-see-through shirt. And if you can find one, it’s probably way out of the average student’s budget- as great as GAP white button downs are, spending 30-40 dollars on a shirt isn’t ideal. This is when your local thrift store becomes your best friend. Both the men’s and women’s sections have a variety of options to choose from that are stylish and high-quality just be sure to throw your thrift finds in the washing machine before you wear them.
Stay warm in your white button down this fall and look forward to more articles from Fetch Fits!
