English Honors I teacher and Sophomore Color Wars representative, Mr. Robert Kaplinger, is hosting a field trip to Medieval Times in celebration of his 10th anniversary working there. The trip takes place November 4 from 6:00 to 10:20 P.M. Permission slips were found in Mr. Kaplinger’s room 5-103 and needed to be turned in on October 24th along with trip payment to MySchoolBucks.com.
Mr. Kaplinger started his journey at OCSA last August in 2022, and although he was new, he quickly became very popular with the students. Most of those who have or have had him as a teacher refer to him as “Mr. Kap.” Last year, Mr. Kap was known as the teacher who worked a second job, but nobody at the time knew what that job was. When one student figured out the mystery, Mr. Kap urged to student to keep it as a secret so he could reveal it at the end of the year. So, in order to keep it a secret, he would tell his students that he worked at Mattress Firm as a joke. But when he revealed his actual second job, Medieval Times, to the students they were overjoyed. He told them that he was thinking of doing a field trip but said that it probably wouldn’t be until the 2023-2024 school year, in order to celebrate his 10th anniversary of working at Medieval. Which begs the question: how does he do it?
When asked how he manages to juggle his two jobs, Mr. Kap responded, “Huge lack of sleep. I had a very unhealthy work balance life. But eventually, I ended up doing Medieval Times strictly for the weekends so I could give all my time and energy to myself and my students.” Now finding a balance in his life, he is excited to share the Medieval experience with family, friends, and of course, his students.
The cost of the trip was $47.95 for students, and $54.95 for OASIS approved chaperones. The dinner and show will be included with the ticket, with a vegetarian meal as an option. The two main meal options for the dining part of the experience are a rotisserie chicken that goes with tomato soup, a baked potato, garlic bread, and corn. For those who are vegetarians, they have the option of getting a rice bowl with pita bread and hummus, with a side of celery and carrots.
Students need their own mode of transportation to Medieval Times (4510 W Vine ST, Kissimmee, FL 34746). Parents are responsible for dropping their child off at the venue at 6 P.M. and picking them up by promptly 10:20 P.M. on November 4th.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all students at OCSA, so, come on down if you feel like going on a Medieval adventure! Mr. Kap is a great teacher, and an even greater knight. You won’t want to miss it!
