After participating in District 11 IEs on November 4th, OCSA’s high school Thespians, Troupe 6640, went above and beyond at the “Thespys” held in Melbourne high school. After hours of rehearsing, the members of Troupe 6640 received 7-Excellents, 17-Superiors, and 4-Best in show performances, with the only scholarship available awarded to one of OCSA’s students, Chanelle Burham who said, “Being able to share my art and even be awarded with a scholarship, has been one of the most thrilling experiences!”
District festivals are held throughout the year, in hopes of sharing the artistic abilities as far as theatre concerns. But not to worry, all are invited to join! Without every single major on campus, theatre couldn’t survive. As a family, we bring theatre to light and showcase our talents in our own beautiful way.
OCSA attends these festivals every year; first there are district meetings, which help narrow down and decide who has the capabilities to go to state. Think of it as the MPA of theatre, except everyone can attend! Thespians from all over Florida go to the district meeting and compete with other counties.
Creative Writer Jenai Greer, who also won a superior for her playwriting piece says, “As someone who is just returning to thespians after not participating for 2 years, I could not be any more pleased with the work I am seeing being produced and my ability to be a part of it.”
Out of all those who attend the district festival, only 6 go to state, all chosen by Ms. Reeves herself. However, the “Best in show” students are automatically picked to go to state, then superiors are considered. Usually, Best in show performers have perfect scores, but for this festival, only one student was awarded a flawless result: OCSA student Mycheal McGinnly, who performed an acting piece. “This was my first Thespians competition, and I am so thankful for everyone who helped me prepare. I have grown so much as a performer and owe it all to my troupe!” Stated Mycheal.
The other students who earned the best in show title were Jada Acebo and Nina Chukwu in a duet acting piece. “Winning best in show with one of my best friends was a super rewarding experience and it means a whole lot to me. With it being my senior year, it has even more of a sentimental meaning,” said Jada when asked to summarize her experience. Nina said “This was my first time ever at district IE’s; I was very nervous but as soon as I started to perform, I felt so comfortable and in the moment. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and hope to share my talent with others.”
Melany Escobar, who performed a choreography piece said “Success is not an accident., it is hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance, and that’s why troupe 6640 got 5 best in show! So proud of us!”
“We earned our way there” said Ms. Reeves, with a hopeful smile on her face “If you want something, you have to work hard for it.”
