“When you the kids the freedom to explore they come up with more ideas,” says Mrs. Patricia Calderon, one of OCSA’s Visual Arts directors. Big ideas, small wonders, the art exhibit was on December 1st. This yearly event is hosted by Mrs. Calderon and sponsored by the National Arts Society. It was held in the main hall from 5:30-6:30pm and showcased pieces from all grade levels.
The goal of this event was to bring awareness to the art of the community. Only a couple years back the art show started implementing a theme. The theme adds some more creativity to the art showcased and the overall event. This year’s theme was come up with by Mrs. Calderon (Big ideas, small wonders). “I wanted kids to explore,” she says as she talks about the importance of letting her students have free will with their art. She goes on to say how when students are given more freedom, they create without fear, allowing them to create stronger art.
Students were given time in class to work on their pieces and did an exceptional job crafting art ‘smaller than piece of paper.’ “I was excited to finish my piece for the show and see it hanging up in the main hall,” says Zoe Sosa, a ninth-grade visual artist. This art show allowed students to adventure in their art and push their limits when creating.
