The National Honors Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) movie night is a fundraiser for some of OCSA’s most ambitious dancers. Everyone is invited on Tuesday, January 16, 4:30pm-7:00pm to watch La La Land in the EXPO Hall. Movie tickets can be found on MySchoolBucks for $10 which includes admission, two slices of pizza, a drink, and the universal classic movie snack, popcorn.
Bringing warm blankets and pillows is highly encouraged so the emotional rollercoaster of a movie can be enjoyed in the most comfortable conditions. On the night of, chocolate candy bars and chewy gummies will be sold for $1 each. Since La La Land is PG-13 and the event is open to all students, purchasing a ticket is considered a sign of permission to view the movie.
Funds collected from the event will help NHSDA plan future events: schoolwide activities, attending the Florida Dance Performance Assessment, banquets, and more opportunities for their members. As the Chapter Sponsor for NHSDA, Ms. Perendy has been able to induct more members with each year. “The chapter is growing… it’s exciting that students are wanting to go for these opportunities,” she remarks.
Out of eleven movies that are mainly musicals with heavy dance elements, La La Land was the number one option chosen during NHSDA meetings. It stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling with moments of light laughter, serious drama, and touching romance. Ms. Perendy remembers seeing La La Land when it first came out but notices that she enjoyed it much more while rewatching it last week to ensure the movie was school appropriate. She elaborates, “The end had me crying. It’s good, it’s very deep… It’s a story about life and choices that we make, especially as an artist. It’s about two people who are very passionate about their arts and how they help and push each other to pursue that, but also how it can get in the way. I think it’s very relatable to probably a lot of students as they get older and pursue their passions.”
Students are expected to leave the Expo Hall inspired, in awe, or in tears after watching a film that is highly praised across all boards.
