Drumroll please! The students of OCSA are coming back with yet another performance: Fahrenheit 451! Originally written as a book in the 1950’s, the novel presents a future American society where books have been outlawed, and “firemen” burn any within sight. In attempts to keep society happy (or so the Americans were told) the government believed that if people couldn’t form their own opinions, there would be less conflict, therefore resulting in a happier society.
In this novel, books are seen as a threat, where the government fears that the ideas presented in them could promote individuality rather than suppress it. While most of the population is submissive to their authority, there are others who challenge them, the outcasts. In this powerful drama, we follow the protagonist, Guy Montag, a fireman struggling and unsure of his decisions in his life. Though it’s not until he meets 16-year-old Clarisse, who’s filled with strange and different ideas, that he rethinks his life and inevitably ends up in a dangerous and highly volatile situation.
The author, Ray Bradbury, said he wrote this novel to “…prevent book burnings, not induce that future into happening, or even say it as inevitable.”
The OCSA student body will be performing their take on this life-altering novel on February 8th and 9th, 2024 at 6:30 P.M. There’s a 10-dollar admission that can be purchased on MySchoolBucks.com. So, swing by, bring a friend, and watch the performers take the stage and pour their hearts out. Ace Blazi, sophomore drama major, who plays Montag, says “This is going to be one of the best and heavily technical strait play OCSA has had in a long time! I could not be more excited!”
