It’s February, and that means that everyone and their mother is going to MegaCon- a pop-culture event filled with something for everyone. In honor of MegaCon season, we’re going to be looking at some of the most fashionable anime series for this month’s issue. As a disclaimer, some of the series mentioned on this list do contain mature subject matter, so keep that in mind when determining which one you want to watch.
Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon’s crime-fighting characters sport a wide variety of outfits, ranging from their iconic sailor suits to dresses straight off Chanel’s runway. But some of the most beloved outfits from the series are actually from the day-to-day wardrobes of the main cast. When they aren’t fighting evil space villains, they can be seen wearing some pretty darn cute looks. From pink overalls to burnt ochre suits, the character’s personalities shine really through the outfits, and they’re a great source of inspiration for you own day-to-day outfits.
Nana & Paradise Kiss
Manga author Ai Yazawa’s work is loved by many for the unique styles of her characters. While Yazawa has created many iconic series, Nana and Paradise Kiss are two of the most popular ones. Nana is about two girls with opposite styles that share an apartment in Tokyo, and Paradise Kiss is about a high school girl trying to make it as a model. From the Vivienne Westwood-clad Nana Osaki to the pink-and-rainbow-loving Miwako from Paradise Kiss, Yazawa’s love of Japanese street fashion shines throughout her work.
Black Butler
Set in Victorian England, Black Butler follows the adventures of a wealthy little boy and his demon butler as they solve mysteries and report back to the queen of England, meeting a cast of colorful characters along the way. While it isn’t an outright fashion-focused series, the elaborate Victorian looks worn by the characters are incredibly popular and loved by many. “I love Grell’s design so much! Red is one of my favorite colors, and I think her outfits suits her personality really well,” says Momo Sutton, a junior Creative Writing major and Black Butler fan.
Michiko and Hatchin
While it’s a little less popular than the other series on this list, Michiko and Hatchin tells a compelling story set in Brazil about a hot-headed criminal and an orphan girl who team up to find the man that connects their pasts. Despite constantly being on the run, Michiko manages to change into a new glamourous outfit in each episode. Inspired by R&B icon Aaliyah, gold hoops and flared jeans are staples in her wardrobe.
Wishing all our readers attending MegaCon a fun and safe weekend!
