Over Spring Break, OCSA High School Thespians, Troupe 6640, went to their state competition and made history for OCSA’s theatre program. They achieved multiple first-time awards including: 5 Superiors, 1 Excellent, 2 Top Honors awarded to Mycheal McGinley and Melany Escobar, 2 judges’ choice, and a scholarship for Chanelle Burnam.
Back in November, our thespians participated in their district festival and various students were awarded the “Best in Show” title, who were automatically considered to go to state. Though, only 28 participants were able to attend, all chosen by Ms. Katherine Reeves, the Thespian Director.
Students who do end up going to thespian states are given various opportunities such as participating in workshops with professional Broadway stars, actors, directors, casting agents, etc. Truly, it’s an opportunity to push yourself past your limits, and become closer to your peers. Though, these students have been endlessly practicing and perfecting their craft from the very beginning of the year. “It’s the ones that try, fail, and try again that are able to succeed.” says Melanie Escobar, a 10th grade drama major.
For two other students, Mycheal McGinley and Chanelle Burnam, this will be their very last competition in Thespians as seniors Drama Majors. “My last year in Thespians was such an amazing experience! I’m so proud of my troupe and I can’t wait to see what Troupe 6640 does in the future!” says Chanelle with a proud smile on her face. As for Mycheal, this is their very first and last state competition and nonetheless saying “State thespians was a really cool experience. The troupe is very supportive of each other, and it was very encouraging to have my friends cheering me on while I competed.”
