Directing Showcase is just around the corner! This collaborative event between OCSA’s Creative Writing and Drama Department will take place in the OCSA Blackbox at 6:30pm, though seats are limited for those who receive tickets from either the directors or actors. For many years, directing showcase has displayed numerous works created by talented playwrights and directors. It has become a tradition for the junior directing class and creative writing students to work with one another throughout the course of a few months to make a script come to life.
So, how does Directing Showcase work? The process starts with an assignment in Mr. Capley’s Creative Writing classes in which they must construct 10-minute plays. After weeks of crafting and drafting, the plays are finalized, and those who want their plays considered for the showcase must submit their works to Mr. Capley, who then sends them to Mr. Clegg, the high school drama department instructor. The junior drama students then go through each and every play, continuously deciding and evaluating which plays meet certain standards where eventually, the plays are chosen and are forwarded back to Mr. Capley.
It’s then the responsibility of all students to communicate and set up casting days, rehearsals, and more to ensure everything goes smoothly. Junior Creative Writers Momo Sutton and Natalie Ramirez, writers of one of the selected plays, say “As the playwrights for Finding Larry, we were very excited to meet with one of the directors for our play since this is our first-time being part of directing showcase. We can’t wait to see the finished product!”
Congratulations are in order for the list of this year’s 10-minute play selections:
