The Musical Theater class is ready to put on their third showcase tomorrow, April 23, in the OPAC from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, with free admission for all! Mr. Herzog and Ms. Perendy, who specialize in vocal and dance respectively, put their skills together to direct the Musical Theater Showcase. There will be pieces from eighteen different musicals, such as Shrek, Hamilton, Hadestown, Six, Beetlejuice, and more.
Back in August, the Musical Theater students got to know each other, then worked on basic dancing and singing techniques before jumping right into the showcase in September. Co-teacher of the class, Ms. Perendy, notes, “We have been preparing for this show for basically the whole school year.”
With permission from Tech Director, Mr. Davis, the students raided costume shop to piece together outfits for their characters. Since this a collection of different musicals, the costumes will not be as full-fledged as they would for a main production, but still nothing short of amazing.
“I think the students, the performers are having a fun time with it. Herzog and I are the directors, but this ninety percent student created, student driven, so it’s mostly their work,” says Perendy. With the big night just around the corner, student energy is at an all-time high! As the main creators and performers, they have shown impressive motivation and determination to put on a good show.
Perendy has worked on the showcase for all three years since the very first, “This is the third Musical Theater Showcase that we’ve had, I think this is the one that we’re feeling the best about.” Herzog and Perendy faced a lot of struggles while doing everything from scratch during the first year, but the show ended up working well in the end.
This year, Herzog and Perendy are working with about 23 students to create a stronger, higher quality product. “Everything is really solid,” says Perendy, “everything was done a lot earlier, we aren’t trying to rush and finish everything the week before because we have less kids.” The class is open fifth period to anyone in high school who wants to have fun and try something different. Their focus on storytelling through acting, dance, and music will be on display tomorrow night. Be sure to come out and support all their hard work!
