Hadestown is the modern musical retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It’s a show of trust, romance, and power (and who doesn’t have it). In order to create a contrast between the hopeful and the hopeless, the musical mixes genres such as folk, jazz, and blues, which makes for a very magical listening experience.
The show has become a recent fan-favorite since it’s Broadway debut in early 2019. Although the version that’s being performed is the teen edition, it still does an excellent job of being insightful and entertaining. “What makes it so unique is, it’s not your typical musical for one thing,” Mr. Clegg, Hadestown director and Drama director, explains, “it’s basically sung through. The cast moves the entire time… everything from the moment we walk on stage till the moment they leave stage, there is some type of movement going on.” With Hadestown already being a vocal-heavy show, to incorporate constant movement into the show will make for an all-around enchanting performance.
Yesterday, October 23rd, we were given a sneak peak of the opening scenes of the show. Hermes welcomed us as an audience and with the help of the ensemble, started to tell the story of Hadestown by singing “Road to Hell.” We see more of the story unfold as we are introduced to Eurydice in “Any Way the Wind Blows.” Then, we skip ahead in order to meet Persephone in “Our Lady of the Underground.” Finally, we’re enchanted through the vocals of Irielle McFarlane as she embraces the character of Eurydice in her solo number, “Flowers.”
So, if you want to be livin’ it up on top: Hadestown will be performed on the mainstage on today, October 24th and 25th at 6:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased on MySchoolBucks for $15, or you can pay in cash at the door. We hope to see all you little songbirds.
