OCSA’s national honor society (NHS) is accepting applications until September 18th. National honor society is a national club meant to showcase academic scholars who go above and beyond. It is a way for students to be recognized through opportunities where they can meet other scholars like them. In this club, members devote their time to their community.
General requirements to be considered include grade level, 10th through 12th graders only, and an unweighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. All majors are welcome to apply for consideration. This clubs looks at more than just grades, but also at leadership merit, extra curriculars and accomplishments the student has. Students will be able to specify all accomplishments in the google form sent out by MS. Smith, official sponsor of OCSA’s NHS. Dues of $15 are required by December for members, especially seniors.
National Honor Society has been attending club fair all lunch yesterday and will be there during both halves of lunch today, Friday September 13. Club President, Laura Sandoval, will be at the booth ready to provide all students with information. She invites you all to come and ask as many questions as needed and to also scan the QR code to apply. The booth specifies in- club as well as out- of- club requirements.
Once inducted, students are expected to participate in a total of 30 volunteer hours and a participation of 4 NHS events. A wide variety of opportunities will be provided for members including partnerships with Give Kids the World, gathering canned foods for homeless shelters, collecting polos for low-income students, card making events for children’s hospitals, campus clean ups, and much more. NHS also helps set up school events and enables students to volunteer. Whatever hours members complete throughout the year will be eligible to turn into their counselor for Bright Futures Scholarships.
Additionally, NHS offers scholarships for 12th grade members. Once applying, 600 students will be receiving the prestigious NHS Scholarship with a total of $2 million available. Seniors are urged to apply for this fantastic opportunity. All members will receive a free club t-shirt in their size to wear with pride all year long. At graduation, a cord is awarded to members who have remained active for at least 1 year.
NHS member and senior Creative Writer, Isabel Tercero, expressed that, “Being a part of this club reminds me how important it is to remain active in the community. It truly is a special feeling knowing that you can help!” Tercero exclaims. NHS welcomes all to come visit their booth today, if you haven’t already!
