This year’s first Creative Writing event, The K Sessions, will feature senior Visual Artist Ally Foster as an opening act. I sat down with Ally to get a few words about her life and music, alongside her advice for other artists.
Ally was taught her first few guitar chords by her father, who is a musician himself. Ally said she “has been playing guitar since she was in 8th grade,” but she’s been singing since forever. “It’s always something I’ve done.” She explained to me that her musical taste is made up of music her parents introduced her to. “My favorite band is “Daughter”, but I listen to Nirvana and stuff.”
Ally told me that she’s written her own songs, although she has no intention of releasing any at the moment. “I would like to make like an album or an EP or something in the future, but right now the songs are just for me.”
When asked how she got the gig performing at The K Sessions, she had a funny story to tell about her first appearance at last year’s Kaleidoscope Cafe: “As soon as I got off stage, I was on like a high. I was like ‘I didn’t mess up!’ I ran to Ms. Kastner, and she was like ‘Mr. Capley is your biggest fan now’. Right there, he asked me if I wanted to be the opening act next year. Immediately I was like yeah.”
You can come see Ally perform for yourself at The K Sessions on Thursday, September 19th in the media center. Her set consists of “Poison Oak” by Bright Eyes, “Love Song” by Adele, and “Shallows” by Daughter. Admission to the event is five dollars cash at the door, and the proceeds go to Dexter’s Kitties to help raise and find homes for cats all over Orlando, including some from right here on campus. Be sure to come out to support Ally, the Creative Writing Department, and the kitties next Thursday!
