Creative writing is more often than not summed up to writing essays and poems, but it is so much more. It consists of expression through every and any form of writing. It is comprising and forming your words into what people can relate-to and feel. It is making sense of everything. It is being fearless with your words. It is opening yourself up to the world. 

Maria Segovia is a senior creative writer here at OCSA ready to share her insight on the major. Many people often don’t understand the why behind the writing. In essay writing, authors choose whether to write for entertainment, education, etc.; in creative writing it’s often a similar idea. Segovia explains why she writes, “Being able to share my emotions and my thoughts into my passion [writing].”. She goes on to talk about how writing is a form of expression in which you can illustrate your thoughts for others to understand. In her writing, she tends to focus on topics such as immigration, change, teenage life, and more. She dives into these topics mainly with her poetry, helping people understand how she feels and learn more about the importance of them.  

Growing your writing with Capley is one of the best experiences you can have. “He pushes you by being harsh and he knows what he means,” Segovia says. Mr. Capley does not hesitate to give you the support, critiques, and push you need to succeed within your writing. As of last year, Ms. Kastner has been brought on as a Creative Writing Director alongside Capley, making the department even brighter. Her ability to help shape and curate the students following their creative writing passion is astonishing. Both teachers assist in shaping young minds with all they have into some of the best writers at OCSA; this makes 

Overall writing is all about creating and expression. “My writing makes an impact on people’s hearts,” Segovia expresses. One of the most unmatched feelings is hearing people feel interconnected with your writing, hearing you made someone feel something with your words. Being able to write with good grammar and format a story is in fact writing but listening to people and reciprocating through writing on paper, in your voice, and into others’ minds, is what we do. Creative writing is all about life, and expression.
