Rapper Malcolm McCormick, most commonly known as Mac Miller has tragically passed away on Friday, September 7th at the age of 26 due to a drug overdose. TMZ reported that a friend called 911 from Miller’s home, but it was too late. He was found in his home at Studio City, California at around noon.

Mac Miller had worked with many musicians in the industry and was very adored by fans for producing critically acclaimed albums throughout the years. His death had come just a month after releasing his fifth studio album Swimming on August 5th.

Miller was born and raised in Pittsburgh. He started rapping as a teenager and first gained popularity with his song “Donald Trump” in 2011. Later that year, he released his debut studio album Blue Slide Park, which was on top of the Billboard charts and eventually went certified gold.

In recent years, it has been reported that Mac Miller had issues with substance abuse. Recently in May, the rapper was charged with two accounts of DUI after a car crash from the Los Angeles Attorney’s Office. The accident came weeks after artist Ariana Grande announced their break up. Mac Miller has then spoken openly about his addictions over the years.

Many celebrities have taken to social media to express their grief. Among them were Wiz Khalifa, G-Eazy and Chance the Rapper. Ex girlfriend Ariana Grande shared a single black and white photo of Miller with no caption on Saturday. She eventually disabled the comments option on her Instagram account after some users blamed her for Miller’s death.

In a statement obtained by Rolling Stone, Mac Miller’s family called him, “a bright light into this world”. Miller’s label company, Warner Bros. Records also released a statement, “All of us at Warner Bros. Records are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Mac Miller’s untimely passing,” Tom Corson, co-chairman and COO of the label wrote. “Mac was a hugely gifted and inspiring artist, with a pioneering spirit and a sense of humor that touched everyone he met. Mac’s death is a devastating loss and cuts short a life and a talent of huge potential, where the possibilities felt limitless. We join all of his fans across the globe in extending our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”
