Over the past year, you may have noticed posters encouraging students to be STARs: Supportive, Transformative, Artistic & Academic, and Responsible. These STAR standards are part of a new Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (or PBIS) program that is currently being put into action at OCSA. The system rewards STAR behavior with a “currency” called STARbucks, which are given to students by teachers as a form of recognition. Some examples of STAR behavior are helping peers succeed in the classroom, overcoming academic and artistic challenges, showing devotion to one’s art form even outside of the classroom, and being proactive with their assignments. “Getting a STARbuck should feel like a pat on the back or good job in the moment with benefits of spending them later on,” said Mrs. McBride, OCSA’s ESE Specialist. Depending on how many STARbucks a student collects, they can be cashed in for fun rewards- and students will soon be surveyed on some potential prizes they would like to receive. So, start thinking about what you’d like to receive for being a STAR!
