Jazz is one of OCSA’s most popular programs, but why is it so widely loved? Many students enjoy watching Jazz performances, but for students in the jazz program, it’s so much more. The program provides both academic opportunities and a safe space for all students to create art and be themselves.
Diego Aviles-Martinez, a 10th grade jazz musician explains he found jazz to be his safe space. With school, parental, and all the other pressures of being a teenager, jazz was an outlet for his creativity. Xavier Link-Anderson, another 10th grade musician at OCSA, shared a similar viewpoint, saying “I started to enjoy school because of Jazz” in an interview.
The jazz program has also helped students grow not only as artists, but as people. Sonialynn Jackson explains “I think one of the most important things I’ve accomplished better in my life since starting Jazz is my work ethic, I can focus more.”
OCSA prides itself on its welcoming environment that allows students to excel at their passions, and the jazz program is no exception. Next month, Jazz A, the highest jazz band, will be attending the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in New York City. This will be an opportunity for Jazz A to showcase their talent and all that they have learned, so be sure to tune in!
