This year, Costco has announced and implemented two new changes in its stores. First mentioned in June, they finally introduced their new “Executive Member Shopping Hours” policy, and after 11 years, they have broken away from PepsiCo and reintroduced Coca-Cola products into their food courts.
Starting with the first change, the Executive Member Shopping Hours will allow shoppers with Costco’s $130-per-year Executive Membership to shop early, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on weekdays and Sundays and from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. During those hours, the Executive Members will have exclusive access to the store. As for members with the other tiers, shopping will be open to the whole public starting at 10 a.m. on weekdays and Sundays, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. This policy will also include food courts, optical centers, pharmacies, and other such departments, although pharmacies will remain closed on Sundays, with no exception under the new policy.
Secondly, after a long partnership with PepsiCo, Costco has returned to its original partner, now serving Coca-Cola at its locations. The change was met with mixed reactions online, with posts on Reddit ranging from “Pepsi tastes like flat Coca Cola” to “Hot dogs don’t taste the same anymore without Pepsi.” Costco originally switched from Coca-Cola to Pepsi in 2013. However, CEO Ron Vachris said in January that they would be switching their food court fountain drinks back to Coca-Cola over the summer. Some psychologists noted that the strong reactions reflected broader cultural divisions, comparing the mixed reactions to cultural divides akin to the Yankees vs. Red Sox or Apple vs. PC.
Together, the new executive shopping hours and the return of Coca-Cola illustrate Costco’s attempt to balance adding value to its more expensive memberships, along with trying to show attention to customer preferences in its food courts. Whether these moves will strengthen brand loyalty or stir further debate among shoppers remains to be seen.
