On September 28, it was announced that popular music artist Bad Bunny will headline the Super Bowl LX (60) halftime show in February. The music icon will be the first Latino musician to headline the Super Bowl and is making history as the entire performance will be in Spanish. The artist, amid a world tour, made it clear that he wouldn’t appear in the United States for fear of ICE deportations.
However, now he is set to appear at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California for the 2026 Super Bowl. He made a statement saying, “what I’m feeling goes beyond myself…. this is for my people, my culture, and our history.”
The Puerto Rican artist has continuously expressed support for his country and due to his recent residency there, boosted the economy and vibrant culture. His concern over ICE deportations has sparked controversy amongst numerous government officials with Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski stating that even at the Super Bowl, “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally.”
Since the announcement, many people have expressed their excitement over Bad Bunny taking over halftime. However, some people have criticized this choice because it goes against the traditional American halftime experience, with no songs seemingly being in English. The President also weighed in on the Super Bowl decision stating that he’s, “never heard of [Bad Bunny]. I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s like, crazy.” Though, Bad Bunny has yet to let the criticism faze him.
When hosting SNL, he made a statement in Spanish expressing how his achievement isn’t just a success for him but for all Latinos around the world. Later he joked, “If you don’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” demonstrating how his appearance during the Super Bowl is happening whether people like it or not.
