Celia Barquín: Murdered

On September 17, 2018, Celia Barquín Arozamena, a European golf champion was murdered in Ames, Iowa. Barquín was a student at the University of Iowa working towards getting her degree in civil engineering.
On Monday, Barquín was found dead at the Coldwater Golf Links. She was found in a pond on the golf course with stab wounds in the head, neck, and upper body. The suspect in her murder is Collin Daniel Richards, a homeless man who is now being charged with first degree murder. The polfirst-degree that the murder was a random act of violence.
Many people are mourning her loss. Iowa’s head women’s golf coach, Christe Martens, stated that ” Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all her team-mates and friends.” Along with her teammates and school mourning her death, Spanish pro-golfer, Azahara Muñoz posted a message on Instagram expressing her grief. In her post she wrote, “Waking up to the news that Celia won’t be around anymore is heartbreaking.” Barquín is the second student from the University of Iowa to be murdered this year. The first student was Mollie Tibbets, a 20 year old psychology major.
