The developing story of the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has spiraled over the weekend as new information has been released and world leaders have released responses.

A Turkish official who was present at the consulate where and when Khashoggi is reported to have disappeared, described audio of the killing. The details are graphic and insidious as he describes exactly how Khashoggi was tortured and murdered by Saudi agents. As this course of events develops and new information, like Khashoggi’s “final column” published by The New York Times, is released, President Trump has been reactive, to say the least.

The president struggles to maintain close relations with the Saudi government while being assertive in the pursuit of a further investigation. The Post’s Shane Harris reported, “The Trump administration and the Saudi royal family are searching for a mutually agreeable explanation for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — one that will avoid implicating Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is among the president’s closest foreign allies, according to analysts and officials in multiple countries.”

Aside from Donald Trump’s ulterior motives in this matter, this developing story is crucial to follow as it is an investigation of the possible death of an important worldwide news figure, a prominent opinionated voice and an open critic of his government. Jamal Khashoggi is a man of journalistic merit and integrity and his story deserves a resolution.
