A solution to nationwide pollution may just result in a second moon in the night sky. China’s “Humanity Star” is more of a vibrant satellite.

Wu Chunfeng, the chief of the Tian Fu New Area Science Society described to China Daily that the intent of the new pseudo-celestial body is to “light up the entire night sky.” Said Chunfeng, “Its expected brightness, in the eyes of humans, is around one-fifth of normal streetlights.” The inclusion of the would save the city of Chengdu alone about 1.2 billion yuan (173 USD) in annual electricity cost. The moon would also be able to extend light an area of up to 10 to 80 kilometers in diameter.

There are many Chinese citizens who are opposed to this announcement as it could do more harm to the growing pollution problem than help. The “Humanity Star” could also have adverse effects on animals and star-gazing.

The launch isn’t for another 4 years but it is truly fascinating how science has developed. We may soon see this sort of satellite technology in the United States, where we can look up and see a double moon.
