Earthquakes Strike Canadian Waters
October 26, 2018
A trio of earthquakes struck off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada late October 21, 2018.
At approximately 10:35 p.m. PST, the residents of Port Hardy, a town on Vancouver Island, felt minor tremors. massive 6.6 magnitude earthquake had struck 135 miles off the island’s coast. Half an hour later, an even larger 6.8 magnitude earthquake was reported, followed by a 6.5 magnitude aftershock. According to CNN meteorologist Robert Shackleford, “This is standard for earthquakes like these to happen in groups of three like this.”
The United States Geological Survey was aware of the quakes, though did not predict any ensuing damage. As a result, no tsunami threat was issued according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The seismic activity was due to Vancouver Island’s relative location to the Ring of Fire. The Ring is an arc spanning 25,000 miles along the Pacific Plate, and is an after-effect of plates grinding against each other in the region.
No injuries or structural damages have been reported.
