On Friday November 2nd, Marston Riley, a teacher at Maywood Academy High School in California was recorded punching a student on camera. According to witnesses at the high school, Riley told the student, whose identity will not be released, to leave the classroom because he was out of dress code. The fight broke out when the student used a racial slur towards Riley, which resulted in the teacher getting physically aggressive.

The Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement about the incident: “We are extremely disturbed by the reports of the events that occurred at Maywood Academy High School. We take this matter very seriously and do not condone violence or intolerance of any kind.” The school is also offering crisis counselors and hiring more police officers to patrol the campus.

The student was admitted to a nearby hospital, but his injuries were not severe. Riley was arrested on Friday and charged with child abuse but was released on Saturday on a $50,000 bail.
