President Trump’s Racist Threat to Elizabeth Warren, Only the Beginning.
February 18, 2019
Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her official 2020 presidential candidacy on Saturday. Proceeding her declaration, President Donald Trump took to Twitter for his reaction in a statement that read, “Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!”
This follows a series of taunts by President Trump about claims Warren’s Native American heritage by Senator Warren herself. Though a DNA test supervised by a respected geneticist at Stanford University and made public in late 2018 shows that Warren most likely has a distant Native American ancestor, President Trump has both made statements accusing Warren of lying about her ancestry and has frequently regressed to ignominious name-calling in her reference; most notably referring to Warren as ‘Pocahontas.’
The allusion to the devastating Trail of Tears in Trump’s response is the greater cause of mass controversy. The event overseen by then-President Andrew Jackson was responsible for the displacement of thousands of Native American and resulted in the death of an estimated 4,000. No matter Warren’s heritage, President Trump made a foul remark and has since refused to accept responsibility.
In hindsight of the 2016 presidential campaign trail characterized by distaste and deplorable antics, one can not know what to expect in the coming year.
