Black History Month Performances
February 20, 2019
In honor of Black History month, OCSA will be performing a variety of pieces relating to African American history in both recital and an afternoon show on Wednesday, February 20th. The Black history month show will be from 4:00-6:00 pm and is free for everybody.
The theme of the Black History recital is ‘The Black Migration’ which shows a timeline of African American culture from coming to the United States as slaves to migrating north and rebuilding their lives. During recital, there will be explanations of the Civil rights Movement, vocal performances, and poetry. The drama department will also be performing a skit written by Junior creative writers, Raquel Perry, Quinn Summerville, and Ciara Wojtala. When asked about the performance, Senior drama major, Ryan Murray, who directed it said: “The skit is about race and how we should look at ourselves and understand we are more than our exterior.”
The afternoon show will consist of tributes to famous African Americans from the past like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, and more. Mrs. Dopson-Ross who is in charge of the Black History Month show said “We’re really trying to capture the influential icons of the past. They set the mark for the future.” The afternoon show will also have open act performances that students have auditioned for.
Mrs. Dopson-Ross hopes that in addition to being entertained, audience members will learn a lot about black history during these performances. Snacks will be given out during the after party, and people attending are encouraged to give a donation.
