Bernie Sanders and an Increasingly ‘Fractured’ Democratic Party

On Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election. The announcement was preceded by a Gallup report that demonstrated an apparent pathway to the Oval Office in a Democratic party becoming increasingly more liberal in ideology. The findings of the Gallup poll prove advantageous for a far-left, self-proclaimed ‘socialist’ candidate.

While this is all promising for Bernie Sanders, the Democratic voting block will see some intense repercussions and may never be the same. Though Sanders is polling well with older generations of registered Democrats, second to former Vice President Joe Biden, a new generation of voters will march to their ballots in 2020 and young people, especially young people of color, have never been Sanders’ demographic.

In a diverse field of hopefuls, new and returning young voters may not relate with his outdated platform. This apparent division will split the Democratic voting block and the subsequent turmoil within the party may cost the election.
