The Southeastern Theatre Conference
March 8, 2019
The Southeastern Theatre Conference is a 3-day annual event meant to provide opportunities for those interested in a career involving theatre production. The convention is held in a different state each year, and last week, OCSA’s upperclassmen tech and drama majors went to Knoxville, Tennessee to attend it.
At SETC, students are welcomed to learn about and audition for southeastern colleges and build connections they can use later on in life. There were over 300 workshops people could attend that not only covered different aspects of theatre, like building your character and stage management, but also taught them how to do things like build their resume and portfolios.
Many tech and drama majors look forward to SETC all year because they believe that it paves the way for their futures. Hayley Schmidt, a junior tech major, says: “SETC is an amazing opportunity for the search of colleges, developing our skills and gaining access to the tech and drama communites.”
Junior drama major, Mohera Beason recieved 75 callbacks from colleges at SETC, breaking a record for the number of callbacks a student at OCSA has ever recieved at the convention. Mohera expressed that she felt proud of herself. “I felt accomplished and like I really did have a place in the drama department. I also felt like acting is something I can do long term and also succeed.” She also said that even though she was happy for this achievement, that the amount of callbacks you recieved is just a number. ” After the hype I knew it wasn’t something to hype over. Whether you got a callback or not, you can still check out colleges and see if they’re a good fit for you. And smart people know that those sixty seconds do not determine how good of an actor or actress you are.”
Next year, SETC will be held in Louisville, Kentucky from February 26th – March 1st.
