On Tuesday, October 9th, the Orlando Police Department found 2-year-old Jenzell Cintron Perez in DeLand after being reported missing on October 8th.

The report came from Perez’s grandmother, who stated that the toddler’s mother, 33-year-old Sugey Perez Diaz, and an unknown man kicked the front door down and abducted the toddler at gunpoint. “She has committed violent acts against the baby, which is why we have the baby. She once broke his mouth, he lost two teeth. If you see the photo you’ll see he has missing teeth because of his mother,” Perez’s grandmother stated. Perez was in the custody of his father, Juan Cintron, at the time of the abduction.

Chuck Cosby, an Orlando Police Department detective, initially stated that while there were allegations against Diaz, no criminal allegations of violence against the child were found. He later corrected himself, stating “There are open  DCF [Department of Child and Family Services] investigations, but there are no criminal charges pending from the result of those.” While there were some DCF cases of the child having injuries, Cosby is unsure if the boy received medical treatment.

Orlando detectives worked alongside the Ormond Beach Police Department, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and U.S. Marshall’s office, according to the Orlando Police Department’s Chief, Orlando Rolón. Police did not issue the initial Amber Alert until 4 a.m. Wednesday, which Cosby stated was meant to prevent Diaz and her accomplice from being aware that police were looking for them while investigators were tracking leads. A similar alert was sent to Osceola County at 11 a.m.

“The child is in good health. The mother is arrested under the warrant for aggravated burglary and assault,” stated Orlando Police Lieutenant, Wanda Miglio.

Although Diaz has been apprehended, her accomplice has yet to be found.
