On February 21, seventy-one Florida legislators voted no on furthering a bill that would ban purchases of assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons. Hundreds of survivors from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High watched in the gallery as the voting occurred, several of them emotional at the outcome.

In wake of the shooting and results of the voting, many schools have participated in a walk out. Gilbert High School, Montgomery Blair High School, Western High School, and the Osceola County School for the Arts were but a few of the many Florida schools that participated in the walk out demonstration.

At OCSA, the walkout lasted seventeen minutes, with each minute serving as an honor of the students and teachers that lost their lives in the shooting. The protests were meant to show solidarity with the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
