In the Heights Auditions Coming Up!

Raquel Perry, Reporter/Marketing Manager

Auditions for OCSA’s new main stage production, In the Heights, are coming up this week. There are three days of auditions. The dates are January 16th and 17th for vocal and acting auditions. Dance auditions are the following Tuesday, Jan 21st.

Students of all levels of experience are encouraged to audition. All students MUST prepare a song from the show and there will be a cold reading at the audition. This means that there is no prepared monologue required. OCSA’s middle school vocal teacher, Mr.Carswell, says that he is looking for “actors who can sing and dance, dancers who can sing and dance, and singers who can dance and act.” In other words, he is looking for students who are willing to do it all.

The book, written by Quiara Alegría Hudes, has become a Tony Award-winning hit musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Jon M. Chu, revolves around characters in the bustling Latino-American community of Washington Heights in New York City. When the neighborhood’s charismatic local bodega owner, and the story’s humble narrator, finally decides to fulfill his dream of going to the island his parents called home, his departure changes his beloved block forever. Piraguas and blackouts, coming home and moving out, In the Heights is a beloved musical that submerges audiences into the vibrant rhythm of the city and uplifts them into the heart of a strong community.
