Megan Thee Stallion did not come to play as this year’s host, wearing multiple captivating outfits. Two of her iconic looks include a U.S.A. themed leotard to celebrate the womens’ gymnastics team and a nearly identical outfit as the one Britney Spears’ wore in 2001 to perform “I’m A Slave 4 U,” yellow python and all.
Flavor Flav presented alongside Olympic gymnast, Jordan Chiles, and awarded her with a custom medal after a technicality at the Paris 2024 Games lead to the Chiles to be stripped of her bronze medal. He called the audience’s attention for a quick Olympic moment, saying, “I know they tried to take your medal away from you, but you know what? I got you something that they can’t take away from you.” She graciously accepted the medal, at a loss for words as Flav placed it around her neck.
The very first winner of best female video in 1984, Cyndi Lauper, introduced Sabrina Carpenter ahead of her three-song medley. As the singer of timeless “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” Lauper highly praised Carpenter for her singing and songwriting abilities. The medley consisted of “Espresso” (song of the year), “Please Please Please,” and other hits from the “Short n’ Sweet” album. Carpenter recreated an iconic moment from her “Taste” music video, with a blue alien in place of Jenna Ortega.
Marking her first time at the VMAs, Chappell Roan walked the red carpet in an ensemble inspired by Joan of Arc. Her fiery performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” was held before a castle with dueling knights on the battlefield until she was the last one standing. Ending up in the final three for best new artist, along with Gracie Abrams and Tyla, Roan was again the last one standing and took home the award.
