Be sure to come see The Directing 1/Creative Writing Showcase this Friday at 6:30PM on the mainstage, where the worlds of creative writing and drama majors collide.
Every year, creative writers craft 10-minute plays that they submit for consideration to the junior drama majors to be in The Director’s Showcase.
For writers, this gives them a chance to perfect their plot writing skills. Since, for a ten-minute play, you need to write ten pages. While that may seem like a lot to non-writers, it can actually prove to be a major challenge to create a full beginning, middle, and end with only ten pages.
Jayson Nieves, 12th grade creative writer, states, “It’s difficult because I want it to be special for the actors and directors who are involved so I try my best to make a compelling story.”
For the junior drama majors, this is their chance to expand their horizons on their directing skills. Once all the playwrights are finished crafting, the plays are sent to the drama department for consideration. The drama majors look at certain qualities such as characterization, originality, plot, ability to stage, etc. Out of all the plays, the drama majors usually only choose between 10-15 to stage.
Isabellah Velez, an 11th grade drama major and director, exclaims, “As you look at 10-minute pieces, with the time limit that we had on it, it gives us the opportunity to be creative in a timely manner.”
The show is usually held in the black box, but due to construction, it was moved to the mainstage this year. We hope to see you all there!
