Shooting at Florida High School

A 19 year old opened fire at a Florida high school yesterday. The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, was a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was suspended for unspecified disciplinary reasons the year before. Cruz killed 17 students and teachers, 2 of the victims died in Health North where they were being treated for their wounds.

The first shots occurred after the fire alarm was pulled by Cruz himself at about 2 p.m. As the students left the building, he opened fire. Administrators and teachers urged students to head back into the building once gunshots were heard; a teacher was shot and killed as he was closing the door to a classroom.

This school shooting is one of several to have occurred in 2018. President Trump has commented on the matter, stating in a tweet, “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher, or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.” He later tweeted that he talked with Florida Governor, Rick Scott, and they are working with law enforcement.

The suspect is now in police custody and will make his first court appearance today.
