A mass shooting occurred at Brown University on Saturday, December 13th, killing two and injuring nine. The shooter has yet to be identified after police recently released a possible suspect. However, they are actively working to find the shooter as well as ensuring safety at Brown and those in the community. As a result of the shooting, classes and final exams at Brown University have been canceled to allow students and faculty appropriate time to process the recent harrowing event.
The university’s President, Christina H. Paxson, commented on the event, stating, “This is a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families, and our local community. There are truly no words that can express the deep sorrow we are feeling for the victims of the shooting that took place today.” Sentiments of grief have racked Providence, the town where Brown University is located, as people across the community have come together to uplift and support one another through the shock of the event.
Numerous people in the Providence, Rhode Island area have also expressed concern knowing that the shooter may still be out in their community. Cole Francis, a senior at Brown University, told CNN, “I think that a lot of people found a lot of relief in knowing that the authorities had caught this person and recovered the weapons that this person may have used. And now to know that he may still be on the street is, is extremely scary and worrisome for a lot of people.”
The shooting at Brown University is among the other 75 school shootings that have occurred within the United States this year. In the Providence community, however, many are choosing to look past the fear and focus on helping each other through the days until ultimately the shooter is found.
