On May 15, President Trump, after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressed that he “did not feel optimistic” about the potential release of notable activist Jimmy Lai. Trump had left for the summit promising to mention Lai and his conditions in prison in hopes that the two nations could negotiate a release. However, he stated that President Jinping’s response was not “positive.”
Since his imprisonment in 2020, numerous individuals have been fighting for the release of Lai after advocating for democracy in Hong Kong led to him being arrested three times in that year. This was due in part to a new national security law in the nation that was created to supress political activism.
In Feburary 2026-after being convicted with “spurious charges of ‘collusion with foreign forces’ and conspiring to publish ‘seditious’ material” as stated by the Reporters Without Borders- the High Court in Hong Kong ruled that Lai would be sentenced an additional twenty years.
Many people have grown weary about this decision and, despite unresolved efforts, continue to urge President Trump to fight for Lai’s release. They note Lai’s age (78) and his declining health while in prison to be the equivalent of a “death sentence”, as his son, Sebastien Lai, states. Jimmy Lai has been held for over five years in solitary confinement with heavy precautions in place to ensure that he interactions with virtually no individuals.
Despite this, Lai’s legacy continues to impact individuals across the globe in the fight for freedom of speech. Since 1995, Lai has been an advocate against the growing issue of censorship within Hong Kong. His consistent effort to spread awareness led to him founding “The Apple Daily”, a Hong Kong newspaper, in which he spent years working through journalism to promote anti-corruption and free expression in the country.
The hopes still remain high for Lai’s return after President Trump’s meeting in China. Lai’s daughter Claire Lai stated, “I’m more hopeful than I’ve ever been that he is the president and this is the administration that will free my father, and we are just so extremely grateful.”
