Former British heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, Anthony Joshua, and two friends were in a Lexus being driven over the speed limit by his driver in Nigeria when they suffered a devastating crash. The crash took place December 29th, at 11 a.m. on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State, in the far southwest corner of Nigeria, police said.
There have been disagreements about what the car they were in was exactly, with the Ogun State Police Command saying it was a Lexus SUV, whilst the Federal Road Safety Corps called the car a Lexus Jeep. Regardless, the circumstances of the crash have since been revealed to have been that the Lexus was “overspeeding,” leading the front tire on the passenger side to burst and a subsequent loss of control, leading to a crash into a stationary truck.
Joshua escaped the crash with minor injuries, while his two friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, lost their lives. The driver was later identified as Kayode Adeniyi, who has been charged with four counts by the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention—causing bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s license.
Adeniyi denied all charges and was granted bail for 5,000,000 Naira ($3,480) and remanded in custody until his bail conditions were met. The case has been adjourned until Jan. 20 for trial.
Joshua, on the other hand, has since returned home. While his potential Feb. 14 fight in Saudi Arabia has since been canceled, he has not announced a retirement like some rumors have claimed. Instead, all he’s shared are tributes to his friends on Instagram, saying, “Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers. I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men. 100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents ❤️ I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers 🙏🏾”
